How long does it take to complete a hand-knotted rug?

This is a common question regarding our hand-knotted rugs.  The answer depends on the size and complexity of the pattern on the rug. Our larger rugs (12x10) can take anywhere between 5-8 months to complete.  Most looms accomodate 5-6 women at a time.  Our smaller rugs (8x6) can take between 3-4 months to complete.  Some of the patterns that are more detailed can take an additional 1-2 months.

What impact does the sale of a rug have on our female artisans?

Accepted Answer

We are proud to be able to support women and their families in such a difficult country as Afghanistan.  Traditionally, rugs are weaved in homes, and many women remain in the home all day.  Our facility provides women a safe place to work, wages above the average woman worker, and a social environment to thrive in.  Each woman who works full time (8hrs) per day x 5 days per week earns enough to provide for a family of 4 each month.

Do you have store location where I can see the rugs in person?

Currently we do not have a physical store location.  You can view all of our exquisite rugs on our website.  We want our customers to be completely satisfied with the rug they order.  If our customers order a rug and are not satisfied once they see it in person they can contact customer service and we can start the return process and help them find a rug that fits their needs.

How are the hand-made rugs made?

The rug-making process includes many phases.  From where we pick out the wool to cleaning and turning it into yarn, all the way to dying the yarn and weaving the rug is a long process.  We are able to use many sectors of support in the economic chain.  We employ partners in each phase of the process.  Please see the link below that explains the rug-making process in detail.

Where are the rugs made?

Our current facility is in the Balkh region of Afghanistan.  This facility allows 50 women at a time to be working on the rugs.  Get a view of the inside of the facility below.
